Out of a Job- become a photographer…

Please don’t! I stumbled across this article and I wanted to cry. This makes my job sound so.. easy

Before I send you this link, the only truth (or close truth) is what we make for income. Please remember I do this FULL TIME. I work 60-80 hours a week. I give up my weekends, I miss family events, and this article makes it out to be a glamourous way to make quick pocket money.

Here’s the link

Here is the snip-it.

I’ve been at this 6 years. I’d like to find this guy and smack him silly. He needs to come hang out with me for a week. He wouldn’t think my job is easy pocket money. The words “part time” made me choke on my water. Shooting on a weekend, 8 hours. Answering emails, 10 hours a week. Editing (for every two hours shooting I spend 1 hour behind the computer.) For one wedding I work anywhere from 30-60 hours. ONE wedding.

Sure, today I am taking the day off (but see.. I’m blogging and sitting in front of the computer answering emails. … What a day off!)

I don’t think this guy did his homework very well…

Either way, there are people out there who think they can pull this off without proper training… I hate to break it to them, but I don’t think I’d pay for an amateur to take shots of my big event and then convert them to black and white in Microsoft photo editor.

    Keep up the great work!

Unfortunately, one of the reasons photography has such a high turnover rate is that people tend to shoot for 1-2 years part time, undercut others trying to make a living wage, and then get discouraged when they realize that charging so little for photography has meant they end up actually paying people to “let them” have the “honor” of photographing their family or wedding or whatever.

With the influx of part timers not charging a fair wage, this has brought the public’s understanding of what they should be paying for photography down to that ridiculous undercut part timers are charging… then the clients begin to demand way more for way less from those of us who are doing it full time because they read somewhere that the “budget’ for a good wedding photographer should be $1500 including a disc and album… what?

    It’s a real problem.

I did the math once, and I think I might be making less than $10/ hour some weeks. And I charge decently for products and services.

It seems like such a glamorous profession, doesn’t it?

Sure…. All we do is point, click and we’re done…. There are no expenses associated with this, right? Oh, wait…. I’ve got well over ten grand invested and could use more gear to get some of the shots I’d like to get……

  5. I so agree with all of this!!!
Crazy articles and sad point of views.
