A few weeks back I was contacted by Chris, from Pennsylvania, to help him with a surprise for his girlfriend, Kathleen. He wanted to propose and capture it all in pictures. I was totally hooked on the idea. I recommended Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, MA due to it’s fantastic sunsets, the cascading boulders, and the bright beach grass. We kept in touch up until the big day via email and texts. Terrified that I was going to ruin the surprise, I kept saying things like “safe to talk” and then realized that could be completely misconstrued if happened upon by, say, Kathleen
The official plan was that I was to be photographing kids on the beach and he was going to walk by and say “cute kids”. I convinced a group of moms and kids to play along, but once those kiddos took to the rocks it got a little crazy. Picture me screaming “okay kids get together!” and “closer!” and “everyone scream HAPPY SUMMER”…
Chris and Kathleen then walked by and he uttered the code words: cute kids. Hoping to make him laugh a little bit I said, “I know.. but they are making me crazy on these rocks! They didn’t sign the insurance waiver!” I kept shooting the mini-mob scene and out of the corner of my eye I see Chris throw a blanket down and get down on one knee. It happened SO SO ridiculously fast. Kathleen was stunned! The look on her face was priceless. After the proposal I went over and gave her a hug and she was speechless. She had no idea who I was and no idea why I was hugging her.
We then filled her in on the entire plan…
These were true engagement photos. After they had a glass of champagne, we set off to do some great sunset photos of them. Congratulations you two – thanks for a really fun experience. I loved being a part of it!
